막단백질은 일단 단백질과 구별되는 여러가지 특징을 지닌다. 특징들을 나열하면,

 * [[Protein]]이 생성된 후, 기능을 수행할 위치인 막까지 이동해야 한다.
 * 막에 존재하기 위해, 중심부분은 [[Hydrophobic]], 양 끝부분은 [[Hydrophylic]]한 성질을 지닌다.
 * 따라서, AminoAcid composition상 [[Hydrophobic]] AminoAcid 의 함량이 타 [[Proteins]]에 비해 높다.
