NucleicAcid(agaros 젤)나 Protein(polyacrylamide 젤)모두 가능하다. LargeScaleSequencing도 근본은 이 방법의 응용.

Drip a bunch of molecules into one end of a tray of gel. Run an electric current thru the gel. Charged molecules will migrate thru the gel in the direction of their charge. Smaller molecules travel faster through the medium than larger ones. So a stain of the result, after a while, will show little bands representing how far cohorts of molecules all of the same size could travel.

Used in very simple genetic matching experiments. A particular RestrictionEnzyme will cleave human DNA with such-and-so frequency. Then small differences in these bands, drawn into gel, will reveal differences in the sources of the DNA.

These bands have appeared in the popular media (a different kind of electrified gel ;-), including the OJ Simpson Trial, Nova, etc. They often exonerate the condemned, postumously.

Techicians grow small DNA samples into large ones, without the intermediate agency of Life, using PolymeraseChainReaction.

Technicians use FluorescentMicroscope's to record some band locations.
